THINKING YOURSELF OUT OF THE BOX

How a MindMentor therapy session works

The MindMentor process takes about an hour, so we can only give a general description here, but we will give you an outline of what you can expect.

MindMentor uses a personal process, not a database

Many people think that MindMentor has a database with a list of problems and solutions. They think that when you enter your problem, MindMentor looks up the right solution from his list. But that's not how he works. MindMentor guides you through a process (a series of steps) to help you find solutions within yourself. Psychologists have found that your own solutions are more effective than other people's advice, no matter how well meant. MindMentor starts this process by asking you what problem you'd like to work on.

He helps you uncover unconscious knowledge

Your unconscious mind is a warehouse full of useful knowledge. Through his colleague RoboRorschach, MindMentor helps you uncover information that you have on a deeper level. He shows you pictures and has you describe what you think and feel. First, this helps you understand some deeper aspects of your problem. Later on, this 'projective work' gives you a deeper understanding of the solution you have found.

He analyzes your thinking and feeling

MindMentor will ask you for specific situations in which you have the problem. For these situations he will then analyze your inner experience:
- What do you do?
- What do you see in your mind's eye?
- What do you say to yourself?
- How do you feel?
- What do you find most important?
His analysis clarifies the different ways in which you can change your response to these problem situations.

He looks for counterexamples or role models

Once you have defined your problem and MindMentor has analyzed your thinking and your emotional responses, he starts looking for counterexamples. A counterexample is a moment when the circumstances are more or less the same, but you do not have the problem. A counterexample is an exception. Once you find a moment like that, MindMentor will analyze your thinking and feeling on those moments too. And then he will contrast this with the problem thinking he found before. In this way, he'll help you find a better way of thinking, better self-talk, better mental imagery and more productive values.

If it's not possible to find a counterexample, MindMentor will ask for a role model: someone who you feel could handle the problem situation very well. And then he will analyze the experience of that role model (as you imagine he or she would respond).

He checks for possible negative side effects

Unfortunately, some solutions are worse than the problems they were designed to solve... MindMentor helps you check your solution. Are there problematic consequences or unwanted side effects? Does the problem have advantages that you will lose when you solve it? If so, he retraces his steps, to find new solutions without these drawbacks.

He does mental practice with you

Once you have gained a deeper understanding of your solution - again through the projective work of RoboRorschach - MindMentor does some fairly detailed mental practice with you. Research shows that this is important for psychological change. He lets you imagine both from within and as an observer, how you will use the solutions in future situations.
